Lindsay Matteson’s Black Manhattan

Recipe & Commentary by Lindsay Matteson | Photography by Travis Gillett

“The Black Manhattan is a modern classic traditionally made with Averna in place of sweet vermouth. Nowadays guests are calling for it with different amari. I like it with Lazzaroni Amaro. Lazzaroni has been making amaro and liqueurs since the 1800s. Their amaro is a delicious Alpino (Alpine amaro). It is full bodied and slightly more bitter, which works great in a Black Manhattan because it stands up to the body of the bourbon.”
