Old Fashioned: Fireside Chat

Story and Photography by Heather Wibbels

My first test of a new simple syrup is always an Old Fashioned. For this version, I prefer smoked cinnamon bitters and ginger bitters to bring out the orange and clove flavors in the simple syrup and bourbon, but orange and Angostura would also work. Because of the strength of its maple base, when you use the infused maple syrup, start with 0.25 ounce and add to taste.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 0.5 ounce infused simple syrup or 0.25 ounce infused maple syrup
  • 2 dashes Old Forester Smoked Cinnamon bitters
  • 1 dash Hella Bitters Ginger Bitters
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish
  • Orange peel, for garnish

TO PREPARE:

Combine bourbon, syrup, and bitters in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir until well-chilled, about 20 to 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass with one large rock of ice. Garnish with cinnamon stick and orange peel.
